New Nintendo Console Rumoured

Get ready to Wii number 2...

Developers are working on a new Nintendo console ahead of a possible unveiling at this year's Game Developers Conference, reports VideoGamer.

The website claims to have received the information from an employee with a major international publisher.

"Just heard a rumour that you may be interested in: Nintendo are going to announce a new platform at GDC. Some devs have already started work on it," said the source.

It is unknown whether the new system is a handheld, home console or something different. The insider also explained that the platform's existence is a certainty, though an appearance at GDC is merely a possibility.

Rumours of Nintendo's next hardware project have circulated since 2008. In a recent interview, studio president Satoru Iwata discussed the company's next move.

"If asked if making the Wii compatible with high definition - just making it compatible with high resolution - will get players throughout the world to buy it, I would of course say 'do you think it would sell with just that? It needs something new." he said during a session.

"If there were no rival makers in the world, I could give examples of the things that we are considering. However, for competitive reasons, I cannot give specifics today on the what or when of the things we're considering."

A Nintendo spokesperson refused to comment on the potential new console, dismissing the report as "rumour and speculation".
