At its press conference at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, Sony officially announced the name of its new motion control system: Move. It had previously been referred to as the Arc, the Wand, Gem and the Vibrator*.
"The Move is fast precise and accurate. From the tiniest twist to the strongest punch, you can express yourself. This is the next generation of motion gaming," said Peter Dille, Senior Vice President of Marketing and the PlayStation Network. "Nothing has been this precise."
The demonstration showed the Move being used with 'Motion Fighters' (a Fight Club-esque fighting game), an archery game, table tennis, a golf game (likely Tiger Woods), a sword combat game ('Gladiator Duel') & an art game. They also demo'd 'Move Party!', 'EyePet' & 'LittleBigPlanet' using the device.
Sony also announced that an accessory called the Move Subcontroller will also be available for the system. It will allow you to play shooters like SOCOM 4 with two motion controllers. The main Move unit handles aiming and shooting, while the Subcontroller handles movement and other functionality. Sony showed a demo of SOCOM 4 in action, using the two-controller setup.
The system uses the PlayStation Eye, the Move wand and the PS3 itself to register player movements and translate them into on-screen actions. Dille said Sony plans to launch the system this fall. A bundle will be available that includes the Move controller, the PlayStation Eye and an unnamed game. The starter kit, which has the PS Eye, the PlayStation Move and some sort of game will be less than $100 (~€73).
You can check out more images & videos of the Move and its games here. We'll have more updates from GDC 10 as they happen.
* May not have been referred to as the 'Vibrator'... but definitely should be known as the 'Dille-doh'. *snigger*
